Lawns in the Glebe

Lawn care Glebe, shade, canopy and leaves.

The Glebe sits under a mature canopy of maples, elms and oaks, and most of its lawns grow beneath it. Narrow lots between brick houses leave small front yards and backyards that see only a few hours of sun. Lawn care Glebe homeowners can count on starts with the shade, and in the fall, with the leaves.

A full canopy means thin grass and heavy leaves.

On the streets between Bank Street and the Rideau Canal, tall maples and elms meet over the road, and front lawns get dappled light at best by July. Grass under a canopy that dense grows slowly, competes with tree roots for water and gives way to moss in the dampest corners. We leave it long and never cut it short to make it look neat.

Lots here are narrow, often with a shared driveway or a tight walkway between two brick houses leading to the backyard. Our walk-behind mowers fit those gaps, and clippings are blown off the brick, the steps and the sidewalk before we leave. That finish is part of the lawn care Glebe streets expect.

Near Patterson Creek and Dow’s Lake, some yards back onto parkland with even more trees, and the soil stays cool and damp into June. Those lawns respond best to fall aeration and overseeding with a shade-tolerant fescue, done after the heat breaks in late August or September.

Dow’s Lake and the canal banks near many yards here are federal land, looked after by the National Capital Commission: National Capital Commission.

What we do differently here

  • Shade-blend overseedingThin lawns under the canopy are overseeded with fine fescue, not sun-loving bluegrass.
  • Leaves in two visitsHeavy leaf drop is cleared over two fall visits so the grass is never smothered.
  • Brick and steps blown cleanClippings never stay on a walkway, a porch step or a shared drive.

Your season

Fall is the big season in the Glebe.

From mid-October into November, the canopy over the Glebe Annex and the streets around Lansdowne drops more leaves than most lawns can take. Left in a wet mat, they kill the grass beneath by spring. We split fall cleanups here into two visits and pair the last one with the final cut.

FAQ

Lawn care Glebe questions, answered.

Shade and root competition. A mature maple takes most of the water and light, and the grass underneath grows slowly. Cutting higher, overseeding with fine fescue each fall and raking leaves off before they mat down is what keeps grass going under a full canopy. Some deep-shade spots do better as garden beds.

Usually two. Leaf drop under the big maples and elms runs from mid-October into November, so one visit clears the first wave and a second, later one clears the rest before snow. Lighter lots can manage with one; we tell you which when we quote lawn care Glebe properties.

Yes. Where two houses share a driveway, we cut the grass on your side, trim the edge along the drive and keep clippings off both cars and both doorways. If your neighbour wants the same day, we can schedule both lawns together.
