Timing

The hedge trimming Ottawa cedars need, and when to book it.

Once in early summer, once in late summer

Cedars put on most of their growth in late spring. The first cedar hedge trimming goes best in mid to late June, once that growth has hardened. A second, lighter trim in late August keeps the shape through winter.

Avoid heavy trimming after mid-September. New growth that starts late does not harden before the frost and turns brown.

Why cedars go bare at the bottom

A hedge cut wider at the top than the bottom shades its own lower branches, and they thin out. We cut a slight taper so light reaches all the way down.

Cedars also do not regrow from old brown wood. That is why regular light trims work better than a hard cut every few years.

Snow and winter damage

Heavy snow can split tall cedars open. A trimmed, tapered hedge sheds snow better. If your hedge sits next to a driveway where snow gets piled, keeping it trimmed narrow helps it survive the winter.

That is why the late-August round matters: the shape your hedge goes into winter with is the shape that has to carry the snow.
