Why the height of the cut matters
Most Ottawa lawns are a mix of Kentucky bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass. These cool-season grasses stay thickest when they are kept at about 3 inches. Lawn cutting any shorter lets the sun reach the soil, which dries the roots and gives crabgrass and weeds room to start.
We never take off more than about a third of the blade in one cut. That rule is the main reason weekly mowing looks better than a cut every two weeks: the grass is never stressed by one big cut.
