The program

Lawn fertilization in five rounds, each at the right time.

Grass needs different things in April and in October. Each round is timed and blended for that part of the season.

  • Round 1: early springA light feeding to green up the lawn as it wakes from winter.
  • Round 2: late springFeeding for the main growth spurt, and the first round of weed treatment.
  • Round 3: early summerA slow-release feeding that carries the lawn into the heat without burning it.
  • Round 4: late summerRecovery feeding after heat and drought, and a second pass on weeds.
  • Round 5: late fallThe winterizer: feeds the roots to protect the lawn over winter and green it up early.
  • A note after each roundWhat went down, and when it is safe for kids and pets to use the lawn again.

The rules

Weed control in Ontario.

Why a thick lawn is the real weed control

Ontario has limited the use of pesticides on lawns for cosmetic reasons since 2009. Many weed killers that are sold elsewhere cannot be used on a lawn in Ottawa for looks alone.

So the best lawn weed control is a lawn thick enough to leave weeds no room. Regular feeding, mowing at the right height and overseeding thin areas do most of the work.

How we treat weeds

Where weeds do appear, we use products that are allowed for residential lawns in Ontario, such as iron-based broadleaf weed control. Those work on dandelions, clover and other broadleaf weeds, and are applied in spring and late summer, when they work best.

Crabgrass is best stopped by thickening the lawn, which is why many customers pair this program with fall overseeding.

Why lawn fertilization timing matters more than amount

Too much fertilizer at the wrong time burns the grass or washes away. Cool-season lawns get most of their benefit from the fall feedings, which build the roots for next spring. That is why our program ends with a late-fall round rather than stopping in summer.

Fertilizing FAQ

Fertilizing and weed control questions, answered.

The five-round program is $299 a season for a small lot, $379 for a standard detached home and $469 for a large lot, plus HST.

Keep kids and pets off the lawn until it has dried after a round, usually a few hours. We leave a note after every visit so you know when it is done.

We can reduce them a lot, but no lawn in Ontario is weed-free for good. The rules limit what can be used, and seeds blow in from nearby. A thick, fed lawn keeps them to a few.

Granular rounds work best with a light watering within a day or two, if it does not rain. We tell you after each visit.
